  1. Melt the butter.
  2. Beat in the eggs, alternating with 1/2 cup of the sugar.
  3. Add the milk, walnuts, cloves, cinnamon, brandy and finally the flour, which has been sifted together with the baking powder.
  4. Butter a baking pan and sprinkle the rusk crumbs in the bottom.
  5. Pour in the batter and bake for an hour in a moderate oven.
  6. Boil the rest of the sugar in 2 cups water, to which the lemon juice has been added, for five minutes, and pour the syrup over the walnut cake.
